During an inspection in response to concerns

We received information from a whistle blower that people at Beechwood were not getting the support they required.

During the inspection we spoke with five people who used the service, two staff, the manager, health and social care professionals and a relative. We also looked at records relating to the areas of concern raised.

We found that people were receiving the care and support they needed from both the carers and from other health and social care professionals. We looked at case files and they contained detailed information about the person. The plans were reviewed each month and where necessary social care professionals had been involved in the review.

We spoke with staff and they were knowledgeable about the people they were supporting and interactions we observed were appropriate and respectful. Staff told us they administered people's medication only when they had completed the safe handling of medication training and they audited the medications on a weekly basis.

We spoke with people who used the service and they told us that the food was "Good" and "There is plenty to go around". Several people had been assessed by a dietician and their diets had been altered accordingly. People told us the staff were 'friendly', 'patient' and 'they always have time for you'

Staff told us that they had told the manager they needed extra staff on duty and she had arranged extra hours of cover for each day.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us that they could decide how they spent their time. They also told us that they were treated with respect by the staff. One person said "You can do what you want here" People also told us that they received the help and support they needed, although some did not feel they were getting the attention they needed.

Staff told us that there were enough staff on duty for them to ensure people's needs are met. They also had a clear understanding of their responsibilitiies in reporting suspected abuse. Staff told us "Once we have done the jobs for the shift we have time to spend with people" The provider told us that she was aware of the need for some of the systems used to monitor the quality of the service needed and this was in the business plan for the coming year.
