All Inspections

17 July 2013

During a routine inspection

The service is a small family run home and the providers live on the premises. Although the home can accommodate three people there was only one person living at the home at the time of the inspection. This person was able to share their experiences of living at the home with us.

We found that people were asked to sign their consent to the planned care and support and were involved in decision making about daily routines.

People's needs were assessed and care plans developed. People were supported to see healthcare professionals for routine check-ups. We found that the provider advocated on people's behalf to ensure they received appropriate support and treatment.

We found that people went out most days to local shopping centres, restaurants and parks. People told us that they liked going out and said, "it's very good, I go to the shops and out to eat."

Systems were in place for the safe administration of medicines in the home.

The home was clean and well maintained and checks were taking place to ensure the premises were safe for people.

There was a system in place for responding to complaints about the service.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

On this occasion we visited The Whitehouse to follow up on two Compliance Actions we imposed on the provider, in relation to the environment of the home and lack of staff training. This was due to us finding at our inspection in July 2012 that people who use the service, staff and visitors were not protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises, and people were supported by staff who did not have appropriate training and development.

Our findings from this inspection was that the provider had taken appropriate actions to protect the health, safety and welfare of people who use the service and ensure that staff were appropriately trained to meet people's needs.

11 July 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit to The Whitehouse Care Home there were two people who use the service present. We were not able to fully communicate with one person and the other person declined to talk with us. Therefore we contacted some relatives of people who use the service and a social care professional involved in their care. They told us that people who use the service were treated with respect and that the staff responded promptly whenever people had become unwell or in need of medical attention.

In the report we have highlighted areas that the provider needed to address, these included ensuring that all staff were appropriately trained for meeting people's needs and ensuring that the environment was safe.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they enjoy living at the home and that they feel well cared for there. They said that they are able to make choices about how they spend their time and that they have lots of opportunities to go out, which is important to them.

People told us that the home is always clean and tidy and that they can have privacy whenever they want it. They also said that they enjoy the food provided at the home and that they liked being able to decide what they want to eat on the day rather than planning the menu in advance.

People told us that those who care for them listen to what they say and treat them with respect. They also said that they get help to make any medical appointments they need and to get treatment if they need it.

People said that they feel safe living at the home. No-one we spoke to had ever had to make a complaint but people said they would feel confident to do so if they were unhappy about something.
