During a routine inspection

We considered all the evidence we gathered under the outcomes we inspected. We used the information to answer the five questions we always ask: Is the service safe? Is the service caring? Is the service effective? Is the service responsive to people's needs? Is the service well led?

Below is a summary of what we found. The summary is based on speaking with people who used the service, speaking with staff who supported them, observation and looking at records.

Is the service safe?

People who lived at the home who we spoke with told us they felt safe at the home. They said they could approach the owner at any time if they had any worries or concerns and they were confident they would listen and sort the problem out.

People confirmed they received their medication as prescribed to ensure they maintained stable mental health.

Is the service effective?

People we spoke with told us that their individual needs, choices and preferences were acted upon and respected by the staff caring for them. One person commented, 'I really like it here. I feel like one of the family.'

People confirmed that although they liked to do different things with their time they got on well together.

Is the service caring?

People we spoke with told us they were very happy living at the home and were complimentary about the care and support they received from the owner and the family members who supported them.

Interactions between people and the owner and family member were seen to be frequent and friendly and the atmosphere was calm and relaxed.

Is the service responsive to people's needs?

There had been a recent emergency situation that involved the owner. Arrangements had been put in place to ensure people had the support they needed from people they knew to ensure minimal disruption to them.

Is the service well-led?

The owner was also the manager of the home and was registered with us. They had provided support and personal care to the people living at the home for approximately 20 years.

The people we spoke with during our visit told us that the owner was very supportive and approachable and they were encouraged to speak with her about any concerns or worries they had.

There had been no complaints about the home. Before our visit to the home we contacted the local safeguarding and commissioning teams. They told us they were unaware of any concerns about the home.

During a routine inspection

People were supported in promoting their independence and community involvement. People liked to go out and meet with friends; others went out for a daily walk or visit the local drop in centre in Bury. One person was in the process of booking a holiday with a relative.

People experienced care and support that met their needs. People told us that if they had any worries or concerns about their health they could speak to the owner or either of the two staff members and they were confident that they would listen and take action to sort the matter out. There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies.

People were provided with a choice of suitable and nutritious food and drink. They said that the owner was a very good cook. They said that their food was always homemade and that they liked what was provided.

People were cared for in a clean home. People told us that they were involved in household tasks such as washing up, vacuuming carpets and putting out the bins.

The provider had taken steps to provide care in a comfortable and adequately maintained home. People share the house with the owner. People had their own bedrooms and shared a separate lounge. We saw that the house was comfortable and homely throughout and in a good state of repair. The owner takes pride in the home.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they had lived at the home for around 20 years and were treated as 'part of the family' and 'everyone got on well together.' People said they could do their 'own thing' for example one person was looking forward to going on holiday whereas another person told us they did decided not to go and would prefer to stay at home. People said that the food they received was of good quality and that the provider was a good cook. They told us they had a choice of what they wanted to eat for example on a Friday evening one person liked to have a curry whereas another person liked to have fish and chips.

People told us that they were mainly looked after by the provider and her husband. They said that the owner had a break a couple of afternoons a week and a family member came to the home to support them. They told us that the provider was always busy as though they were powered by a 'Duracell battery.'

People told us that they felt safe at the home. They said that if they had any concerns that they would speak to the owner or her husband or their healthcare worker. They said they were confident that they would be listened to and that the problem would be sorted out.
