There should be enough members of staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs (outcome 13)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of appropriate staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 9 January 2014, observed how people were being cared for and talked with staff.

Our judgement

There were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people’s needs.

Reasons for our judgement

When we last inspected Southmoor Lodge Care Home we found that there were not enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

The provider sent us a report setting out the actions they would take to meet the essential standards.

The report told us that an extra member of staff would be on duty at busy times and this meant that during busy periods in the area we had been concerned about, people should have their needs met in a timelier manner.

We visited again on 09 January 2014 and we looked at the duty rota. We saw that one member of staff was on duty to work between the two areas of the home. We spoke with the manager, the provider and a team leader who all assured us that this ‘floating’ member of the staff team would be present in the area we were concerned about, during busy periods.

We were also assured that staff numbers would be increased if people's needs increased or if more people were to move to the home.

The presence of a third member of staff during busy periods meant that people would have their needs met in a timelier manner.
