During a routine inspection

During our inspection visit to West Hill Place, we spoke with five people who were living at the service, a visiting relative and four members of the care staff.

All the people living in the home were able to communicate with us verbally and expressed satisfaction with the care and service they received. They told us they were well looked after by all the staff. One person told us 'I like living here and staff are very nice'. Another person told us when they came to live at the home, they were not able to cook or go out independently. They told us 'I can now go out by myself and I go on the bus' and 'I cook for myself'. They also told us they knew how to make a complaint and said 'I will speak to the staff and they help me'.

We spoke with a relative of one of the people using the service. They told us that their family member 'likes living at the home and they are very happy'. They said West Hill Place had a homely atmosphere and it was pleasantly decorated.

We found the provider had systems in place to meet people's health and welfare needs. We also found that medicines were handled safely and staff received training and support to enable them to carry out their job roles effectively. We saw that the provider had a complaints system in place to ensure that any complaints raised were handled appropriately.

During a routine inspection

We met with all of the people who used the service and looked at records relating to the care and treatment of two people who used the service. We found that people had a daily programme of educational, social and leisure activities. People told us they liked helping out in the kitchen making snacks and cooking meals; we saw people being supported by staff to make their own drinks and snacks.

All the people we spoke with told us they were involved in making choices about their care and treatment such as learning about being self reliant when out in the community going shopping and attending college.

People told us about the things the liked to do, such as, watching their favourite TV programmes, movies and listening to music. One person told us they attended a weekly dance class, other people told us they attended work and college and enjoyed going for walks and visiting the local pub.

People appeared relaxed and it was evident they got enjoyment from the activities they were engaged in. We observed that staff worked at a relaxed pace and we heard them speak with people politely and respectfully. The observations and the detailed information available within people's care records showed that people's individuality was valued and promoted.
