During a routine inspection

People living in the home had complex needs which meant that they were not always able to tell us their experiences. We spent time during our visit observing care to help us understand their experiences.

People we spoke with told us that they were happy in their home. Relatives we spoke with told us that they were also very happy with the service. Comments made to us included, "X flourishes there" and "They look after Y well, he's very happy and so am I."

We observed positive relationships between people living in the home and the staff on duty. We saw that people appeared comfortable and relaxed in their surroundings and the company of the staff.

People had care plans in place that contained information to assist staff with meeting their care and support needs. Staff we spoke with knew about people's needs and were able to tell us about them. We saw that personal care and support was provided in private.

We saw that people were being supported to lead active lifestyles with a variety of outings and activities being provided.

The home presented as clean and tidy, with procedures in place to reduce the risk of cross infection.

Systems were in place to ensure that medicines were managed appropriately on people's behalf.

14 June 2012

During a routine inspection

We visited Princes Street on 14 June 2012. Our visit was unannounced so that no one who lived or worked at the home knew we were coming.

We spent time speaking with people who lived in the home and observing the way that staff interacted with them. We did this because some people could not express their views of the service, as they have complex communication needs.

We were told that the home was, "A lovely place to live." People told us they had busy, active lifestyles and were happy living at the home.

We observed that staff were attentive to people and friendly and respectful to them.

We looked at two sets of care records and found that people's needs had been assessed and risks to their health and well being identified. Measures had been implemented to make sure people were not subject to the risk of harm.

We were told that training opportunities were frequent and planned to ensure staff had sufficient skills and knowledge to meet people's needs.

We saw there were systems in place which measured quality within the home and that improvements had been made as a result of audits and surveys.
