During a routine inspection

We wanted to see what life was like for people who were living at Cow Lees Nursing Home. We spent time talking to six people who live at the home, a visiting relative and to five members of staff. We also spoke with the registered provider and senior management. We looked at some of the records kept to support staff in providing the correct care to people who use the service.

Most people were unable to express their views verbally, so we spent time observing how staff supported them.

We observed that staff provided sensitive support using special equipment when people needed help with moving safely, during meal times and when people were undertaking individual or group activities. Throughout the day we noticed that staff were prompt to come to people who were upset or restless and spoke with them using a calm, reassuring tone of voice.

A visiting family member we met told us they were happy with the quality of the care their relative received. They said, 'The care is excellent, I have peace of mind when I leave here each day.'

Staff received the training they needed to be able to safely support the people living there. Staff told us they were well supported and enjoyed working there.

During a routine inspection

People that use the service at Cow Lees Nursing Home have dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences people have we used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people spend their time, the type of support they get and whether they have positive experiences.

We saw that people were dressed in individual styles and attention had been paid to their personal care, so helping to raise their self esteem.

We saw staff interact well with people and they spent time listening to and talking to them.

People who were able to communicate told us they were happy with the care and treatment they were receiving. One person told us, "they (the staff) are very nice.'
