All Inspections

15 October 2013

During a routine inspection

When we inspected there were eight people living in the home. We spoke with four people who used the service, a visitor and four staff. We also made our own observations during the visit.

People who used the service told us they liked the service they received. People felt the staff supported them and met their needs. One person who used the service said "everything is lovely here."

People told us that staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person said 'It's my home and I can keep my independence.' We saw staff speaking and responding to people in a kind and respectful manner.

The care records showed us that people's health needs had been assessed before they came to live in the home. These records included information from health and social care professionals which helped ensure people got the care and treatment they needed.

The employment records showed that staff were supervised and supported to provide the right care to people used the service. The home trained their staff and had the procedures which protected people from any form of abuse. People told us they did not have any complaints but would speak to the manger or staff if they had any concerns. One person said 'yes, of course I know how to complain.'

The service and the building were monitored and risk assessed to ensure they were suitable for the people who used them.

The evidence we collected showed us the service kept people safe and met their care needs.

21 February 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people living at the home. All said that the standard of care was good and that staff worked hard to provide the support they needed. People told us that they were able to make choices about their daily living which staff respected. We spoke with two people who were living in the home. They told us that: "the food is very good" and that "staff listen and are very helpful and try to sort-out problems for us". We saw evidence of how care plans had been reviewed so as to ensure that they reflected the care and treatment choices of people living at the service. The majority of people living at the home continued to go out to events and for meals in local restaurants. People told us that: "staff had asked how me how I wished to be supported". People also told us that:' I did not want to live in a residential home but I'm glad that I chose to live at The Laurels'. We looked at all of the communal and some of the individual rooms at the home. There was an ongoing programme of redecoration and refurbishment which had resulted in a high standard of decoration and furnishing. Staff had access to suitable health and safety and specialist training, to enable them to care and support people. During discussions with the manager and staff they demonstrated that they understood the individual care needs, likes and dislikes of people living at the home.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us they were happy with both the quality and quantity of food provided at The Laurels. They have choices about what they eat and where they eat. Alternatives are on offer, and people participate in creating and reviewing menus.
