All Inspections

18 November 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with eleven people who lived at the home, six relatives, six staff members, the manager and provider. We read four care plans and looked at other records regarding the care of people.

People we spoke with told us 'the staff really look after us here,' 'they are very caring and kind' and 'it is marvellous, I can't fault it.' Relatives told us how they were 'very happy' with the care provided and said they were included in it if they wished. We saw other health professionals were consulted when necessary and their advice included in the care and treatment.

We saw the food served was appealing and people told us it was 'lovely' saying they 'always enjoyed it.' They told us they had "lots of choices" and we saw a variety of meals being served. People could eat their meals where they wished and they were assisted appropriately. The chef catered for various tastes and requirements.

During our inspection we saw the home was clean, tidy and free from odour. People who lived there told us they were "very happy" with the cleanliness and one relative said "it is always clean with no smell."

We saw that people received the medicines they were prescribed, in a timely way and they were administered by qualified nurses.

We were told by staff and people who lived at the home that usually the numbers of staff on duty were adequate and one staff member said they were 'better than usual.'

During a routine inspection

We were informed that there were thirty eight people living at The Beeches Nursing Home. We looked around the building which was clean and free of unpleasant odours. All the rooms were single occupancy with their own toilet and hand basin. The rooms were personalised with photographs, TV's and pictures and some people had their own furnishings. There were three lifts so people could access the first and second floors.

During our visit we spoke with three people who used the service and four members of staff including the registered manager and a visitor. We spent time observing how staff interacted and supported people. We saw staff treating people in a sensitive, respectful and professional manner.

All the people we saw looked happy living at The Beeches Nursing Home. People told us that that they liked living here, and that the staff were very good, another person told us that they were 'quite happy'. A visitor we spoke with told us that they were very pleased with the home and their relative was well looked after.

We saw that care plans were person centre and people's care assessments looked at people's goals and the support they required. Care plans had details of people's likes and dislikes. One person informed us that staff would always ask them what they wanted for example they would select clothes and show them so they could chose.

We found that the home had processes in place to regularly monitor the quality of the service.
