During a routine inspection

We spoke with the two people who used the service at the time of our inspection and one person's relative. People who used the service told us they were happy living at the home and they were happy with the care provided to them. People told us they were happy with the staff. One person told us "the staff are great" and another said "the staff are lovely and very competent". A relative we spoke with told us they were kept informed about their family member's progress at the home and they had regular contact with the registered manager. One person told us they were sometimes a bit bored and would like to go out of the home more, but other people were happy with the activities and arrangements the provider had made.

We found people's care needs were adequately assessed and care was planned and delivered in order to meet people's needs. However, we found some shortfalls in the way the provider had risk assessed people's needs. The provider had monitored the risk of malnutrition and dehydration by regularly weighing people and recording their fluid intake. Although staff had not been formally trained in safeguarding vulnerable adults the provider had taken steps which meant staff knew about abuse and how to report it. We found the provider did not have sufficient recruitment procedures in place and previous recruitment did not promote the safety and welfare of people who used the service. We found some improvements had been made to staff training and record keeping.

During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

Some people that used the service at Oak Residential Home for the Elderly had dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences people have we used our Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI) tool. SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.

People who used the service told us they were happy living at the home and happy with the care provided. They told us 'I feel safe'. People told us they had no complaints with the staff.

People told us they were not offered a choice at meals and would 'take what is given'. We were told the food was good and that people were regularly provided with fruit and vegetables.

A relative of a person who used the service told us their family members' health, in particular their weight, had improved since moving to the home.
