20 June 2013

During a routine inspection

During our last inspection on 01 February 2013, we found shortfalls in the way that some aspects of the control and management of infection was managed. We issued a compliance action and asked the provider for an action plan setting out how they would meet this standard. The provider said that they would be compliant by April 2013. During our inspection on 20 June 2013 we found improvements, surrounding infection control.

When we inspected Holly House Hospital on 20 June 2013 we spent time in most departments and spoke with three people and eight members of staff. All of the people we spoke with were very complimentary about their experience.

People told us that staff had explained their treatment and procedures and that information had been sent to them prior to admission. This included information about consent and any risks and benefits involved in their treatment.

People were assessed and care and treatment was planned in accordance with their needs. One person said, "The staff have been very polite and helpful." Another told us, "I saw the doctor three times before I decided to have my operation. Everything is explained."

The hospital had a pharmacy department which managed medicines across the whole hospital and ensured that medicines were stored, recorded and reconciled correctly.

Staff at the hospital were supported to provide effective care and treatment through induction, appraisal of their performance and training.

1 February 2013

During a routine inspection

People were given information that helped them to make decisions that influenced their care and treatment. They told us that the care they received met their needs and their dignity and privacy was respected. One person said, “The care is very good here. You cannot fault the staff and the nurses are very attentive.”

People told us that they found the hospital to be clean. They said that staff practiced good infection control procedures such as hand washing and wearing of disposable aprons and gloves. We found that some systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection were not effectively implemented.

Records showed us that robust recruitment procedures were in place. This meant that people were supported by suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

People were asked for their views about the service. The provider listened to their comments and used them to improve the service.
