During a routine inspection

We spent time in one of the communal areas of the home, this enabled us to observe people going about the daily activities, as well as observing how staff interacted with people who lived at Arran House.

During this inspection we looked at the care records for two people, spoke with three people who lived at the home, spoke with the providers and two members of staff. We also looked at staff records and maintenance and servicing records.

People we spoke with told us that they were always treated with dignity and respect by the staff. One person said, 'The staff are all really nice, they are respectful and you can talk to any of them if you have any problems.'

We found that the care plans provided staff with the information they needed to meet people's needs.

We found that a range of health and care professionals were involved in meeting people's needs.

We saw that the environment was clean and very well maintained. There were effective systems were in place to ensure safety.

Staff received appropriate training, supervision and appraisal.

Records were accessible and stored securely

During a routine inspection

We found that the people who lived at Arran House were supported to make decisions and choices in their daily lives and encouraged to be as independent as possible. Their personal and religious needs were catered for and their human rights respected.

The health and welfare of people was managed and when physical and mental health needs changed staff took appropriate action to deal with the situation, such as involving other health professionals. Where people needed equipment to assist them with their daily living, staff ensured that this was provided and they were aware of how to access further equipment if needed.

We found that the staff employed by the service provider had undergone a recruitment process which included application, interview and formal references. Identity checks and Criminal Records Bureau checks had been carried out and staff had the relevant skills and experience to support vulnerable adults.

The service had a complaints policy and people who used the service were supported to express their views about the support they received in an open environment.
