At the time of our visit to The Old Haybarn, people were having their packed lunches in The Barn Centre. In the afternoon, the majority participated in exercises to music. One person told us, 'I quite like it [here]. It feels like home. I like all the staff.'

We spoke to relatives of two people who lived at The Old Haybarn. Both relatives told us that they were 'very happy' with the care there. One relative told us, 'It's like (X) has got brothers and sisters, (X) is part of a happy family.'

We looked at the care plans for people who used the service and saw these were comprehensive. They included people's personal profiles, what they liked and disliked. We saw that people could choose what they wanted to eat and were involved in decisions that affected their care and the way they lived at The Old Haybarn.

We saw there were records in place to ensure the safe management of medicines and that staff had received appropriate training to administer medication.

We spoke to staff who told us about the training they had received and that this was refreshed regularly.

Communication between relatives and staff at The Old Haybarn was good. One relative told us that they had, 'Good communication with the home' and that overall they did not have any complaints.

During a routine inspection

We met with six of the seven people who lived at The Old Haybarn. They told us that they liked living at the home and that they got on well with staff. Four people talked to us about their life at the home and the activities they participated in. This gave us a good insight into how The Old Haybarn was run and provided us with evidence that the home met their needs and expectations.

We met four staff who were employed to work in the home and interviewed three of them, including the registered manager. Staff told us that The Old Haybarn was a good place to work and that they believed that people were well looked after and experienced a good quality of life. Staff also told us that they felt well supported in their jobs with access to appropriate training and guidance from their manager.

We looked at a range of records and found that these were well maintained. It was evident that both staff and management understood the importance of keeping records accurate and up to date. This meant that staff were able to support people consistently and effectively.
