During an inspection in response to concerns
We toured the home, checked the conditions in which care was delivered, observed care taking place and reviewed the care records of seven residents.
Concerns regarding the care provided at Jenkin House were upheld.
Whilst we saw examples of appropriate care taking place, we saw care was often delivered in a way which did not respect residents. For example, we saw care staff did not always give residents their full attention and would talk amongst themselves about inappropriate topics. We saw residents being moved in their wheelchairs without staff telling them what they were about to do. We had concern about some terms being used to describe residents and their care.
Care plans contained conflicting information and were not personal, sometimes referring to residents in the wrong gender. Care plans were not always followed and care plan reviews were inadequate.
We had concern about the state of cleanliness within the home. For example, we saw dead insects in some residents' baths, and dead insects in some light fittings. Some rooms had a strong smell of urine.
We saw a significant amount of maintenance work was needed; adequate records for care and management purposes were lacking.
The home lacked effective systems to ensure a high quality of care was being consistently delivered and in a safe, appropriate way.
