During a routine inspection

We visited The Beeches Nursing home on a Saturday. Twenty seven people were resident at the time of our inspection and we spoke with six people who used the service and three relatives about the care people were provided with. People who used the service told us 'I'm on top of the world'. 'the care I receive is wonderful' and 'staff are so kind'. Relatives told us 'they (staff) are brilliant' 'it's warm, it's cosy, staff are kind, its welcoming and I'd recommend it.'

However, the people who lived at The Beeches House predominately had dementia type illnesses and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences of people, we used our Short Observational Framework for Inspection tool (SOFI). The SOFI tool allowed us to record how people spent their time, the type of support they received and whether they had a positive experience.

We undertook observations of staff interacting with people who used the service. We saw staff respond and approach people in a kind and calm manner. We saw that staff showed, through their actions, conversations and during discussions with us empathy and understanding towards the people they cared for. We saw that people's privacy and dignity was respected by the way that staff assisted people.

People were protected from the risks of inadequate nutrition and dehydration.

People were cared for by staff that were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. We found there was enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

During a routine inspection

Some people were not able to verbally tell us about their experiences. Therefore we used a number of different methods to help us to understand the experiences of people, including looking at records and observing care being delivered. People said they were happy living at the home and that they were well looked after.

People we spoke with said they understood their care plans and that staff had discussed their needs with them and explained things in detail. One relative said they felt very involved and communication from the service was extremely good.

People looked well cared for and were responded to promptly, by staff, when they asked for any assistance. We saw staff interacting with people in a respectful and caring manner. They showed warmth and patience.

People said they received their medication when they needed it. One person said, 'They always bring it to you and wait with you while you take it.'

We spoke with seven of the home's staff. Staff told us that they felt well supported by the manager and owner and thought that the home provided a good service.

People who used the service and their relatives were complimentary about the staff. One said, 'The staff are wonderful and always so cheerful. We have plenty to occupy us.'

People said they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to do so. They also told us that they would not hesitate to speak to the manager or owner if they had a problem.

29 March and 29 April 2011

During a routine inspection

We spoke to several people using the service and they said they were very comfortable and happy living in the home. They said the home was well maintained and kept very clean. Comments included 'the home is always spotless' and 'the home is clean all the time, there are no smells'.

They all said the staff were kind and caring and their needs were met. They said there were enough staff and there was someone in charge each day.

They told us the food was excellent and they could have alternatives to the menu if they wished. They said that drinks were always provided and refreshed every day.

They told us that there was enough to do during the day and that they could choose if they wanted to participate in the planned activities or not. People who use the service told us that their visitors are welcomed positively.

They told us they had no complaints but could easily raise issues with staff or the registered manager if the need arose.

Comments included 'Nothing is too much trouble', 'staff are so helpful and attentive', 'I have no worries here' and 'I can not think of how they could improve the care I receive here, it is fantastic'. 'The home is always spotless' and 'the home is clean all the time, there are no smells People who have recently moved to The Beeches commented 'I made the right choice, it is good here' and confirmed that they were fully involved in the planning of moving to the home and identifying in what areas of care they need assistance with.

In discussion with relatives they were very positive about the care that their family member received at the home. They told us that they felt that their family member was treated with dignity, respect and that their care was carried out by skilled staff in a discreet manner ensuring their privacy was maintained. Some comments include 'mum is in safe hands here, I now sleep at night', 'I no longer worry about mum, she is in good hands here'. Relatives also could not identify any areas for improvement in how their family member is cared for. We saw numerous thank you cards from relatives all expressing their appreciation for the care and support that the staff provided to their family member.

Our observations concluded people seemed happy with the service and the people that supported them. Questionnaires completed as part of the home's quality assurance survey show people using the service, and their representatives are happy with the service and according to the survey, they have not suggested any improvements.
