East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was placed in special measures in July 2013.

A panel of staff members makes an unannounced CQC style inspection visit to each ward to assess quality of care. The panel includes a safeguarding lead and a matron from another.

Wards are scored red, amber or green for how they are meeting each CQC key line of enquiry. A ward scored red (not meeting standards) gets another visit in two months. When a ward gets three consecutive greens, they get an accreditation.

This has really helped to highlight areas for improvement and drive changes in practice.

The trust was rated as good in January 2017.
