In July 2014, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was rated as 'requires improvement'.

The trust engaged with employees to look for solutions - crowdsourcing answers from their 17,000 staff.

Every member of staff could respond to questions asking:

  • what they thought were the most important values and behaviours
  • how they could make the hospital a great place to work and a great place for patients

There were over 45,000 responses. Submissions were anonymous, and people could comment on others’ suggestions and vote on them. There were also two large scale engagement events.

Responses were distilled to five organisation values, which became the hallmarks of the ‘Leeds Way’:

  • patient-centred
  • collaborative
  • fair
  • accountable
  • empowered

Wayfinder is also used:

  • by clinical service units to develop their own plans, strategies and stakeholder involvement
  • for corporate staff campaigns to shape the direction of the trust, including  how to learn more from incidents and how to improve the intranet and website

The trust was rated as good in September 2016.
