East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust was placed in special measures in July 2013.

The trust introduced a new quality improvement methodology aimed at reducing pressure ulcers. This was backed by learning sessions and a summit to engage staff.

There hasn't been a Grade 4 pressure ulcer in this organisation across both acute and community services (over 1,000 beds) since August 2014. The trust can scrutinise every pressure ulcer, whether it’s acquired or inherited, consider what to do about it and prevent it happening again. There are now very few Grade 2 pressure ulcers.

Staff see the data which shows what they've achieved and encourages them to get involved in other improvements.

The trust was rated as good in January 2017.
