BAPIO is the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was placed into special measures in June 2014.

The chief executive identified that engaging with black and minority ethnic (BME) groups of staff in the organisation was difficult.

She presented the trust’s work on equality and diversity at BAPIO’s national conference.

The trust then formed an agreement with BAPIO for development and training and developed a BME network with BAPIO.

Local BAPIO representatives worked with the trust on understanding the issues that are different for staff from BME groups.

The aim is to create an environment where every member of staff can flourish in whatever way is important to them.

‘If you can’t be who you are at work, you’re not going to give 100%.’

The trust was rated as good in February 2017.
