Find out which guidance you should use
If you're a provider that runs services in more than one sector, you'll need to understand which sets of guidance apply to you and when they come into effect.
How we monitor, inspect and publish our findings
We've published information for NHS trusts that explains how we will regulate them from now on. This includes how we monitor them, information we need them to send us, how and when we will inspect them and what happens after they’ve been inspected. This replaces the information we have previously published in our provider handbooks.
If you also run services in another sector, look at both sets of guidance
Adult social care, primary care or independent healthcare services will find information about how we monitor and inspect them in the latest edition of the provider handbook for their sector.
If you are an NHS trust that also runs services in adult social care, primary care or the independent sector you will need to:
- read our new information for NHS trusts
- refer to the latest edition of the handbook for these additional services.
What we look at when we inspect
Our assessment frameworks include key lines of enquiry (KLOEs) and prompts that set out what we look at when we inspect services. Inspectors also refer to the corresponding ratings characteristics for the KLOEs, which help to inform our judgements when we give a rating of outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.
We’ve published an updated set of KLOEs, prompts and ratings characteristics for all healthcare services.
- They apply to NHS trust inspections now, providing the trust hasn’t already received a PIR.
- They will apply to some NHS primary care services later this year and next year.
We’ve also published a new set of KLOEs and ratings characteristics for adult social care services. These will come into effect later this year.
If you are an NHS trust that also runs services in adult social care, primary care or the independent sector, you will need to:
- read the new KLOEs and ratings characteristics for healthcare services
- still refer to the latest published KLOEs and ratings characteristics for these other types of services.
