Today sees the publication of our submission against the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) for 2015/16.

The standard sets out indicators of race equality in the workplace, enabling organisations to measure progress and decide what action they need to take to ensure equality of opportunity and fair treatment. Our submission uses the same format and questions as are used in NHS trusts.

Our report shows improvement over last year, revealing progress in three key areas:

  • As at 31 March 2016, the total number of staff in CQC was 3406. The number of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) staff was 421 (12.4%). This represents an increase of 1.3% on the previous year.
  • The indicator 'In the last 12 months, I have experienced harassment, bullying or abuse at work from people other than CQC staff' is 5% for BME staff and 8% for white staff.
  • The indicator 'In the last 12 months have you personally experienced discrimination at work from any of the following? Manager/team leader or other colleagues' is the most improved indicator for BME staff at 7% for 2015/16, compared with 13% for 2014/15.

Commenting on the report, David Behan, Chief Executive said:

"There is more to do in some important areas where BME staff do receive less than favourable treatment but overall the report is progress worth celebrating."
