Regulator demands improvement by Ely care home.

The Care Quality Commission has issued formal warnings to Making Space saying they must make improvements to standards of care at The Limes 1 or face further action.

The warnings follow an unannounced visit by inspectors to the care home in Church Lane, Littleport, Ely, Cambridgeshire on 7 November, to follow up on concerns raised at a previous inspection.

Following the visit, inspectors found the owners of The Limes 1 needed to make improvements in relation to safeguarding people who use services from abuse and supporting workers.

  • Seven different physical abuse allegations had not been reported to the local safeguarding team.
  • The service failed to ensure that staff had received the appropriate training to enable them to deliver care to people safely and to an appropriate standard.
  • An action plan was submitted by the service in August stating staff were to receive training in dementia awareness, Korsakoff’s Syndrome, Huntington’s disease, Pick’s Disease, Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder. This had not being carried out on the day of the inspection.

Andrea Gordon, Deputy Director of Operations (central region) for CQC, said: "The law says these are the standards that everyone should be able to expect. Providers have a duty to ensure they are compliant.

“These warnings send a clear message that The Limes 1 needs to address this issue or face further consequences.

“Our inspectors will return in the near future and if we find that the required progress is not made we won’t hesitate to use our legal powers to protect the people who use this service."

The Limes 1 is registered to provide accommodation for up to 22 people who require nursing or personal care.

Notes to editors

CQC has issued the warning notice to: Making Space, Head Office, 46 Allen Street, Warrington, Cheshire, WA2 7JB, owner of The Limes 1, requiring that action is taken to meet:

  • Regulation 11, safeguarding people who use services from abuse and Regulation 23, supporting workers, Health and Social Care Act (Regulated Activities), Regulations 2010.

Inspectors will carry out a further unannounced visit to assess whether the necessary improvements have been made.

If improvements are not made, CQC has a range of enforcement powers which include restricting the services that a provider can offer, or, in the most serious cases, suspending or cancelling a service. CQC can also issue financial penalty notices and cautions or prosecute the provider for failing to meet essential standards. Any regulatory decision that CQC takes is open to challenge by a registered person through a variety of internal and external appeal processes.
