People's personal records, including medical records, should be accurate and kept safe and confidential (outcome 21)
Our latest report on this standard published on 9 October 2012
We inspected on 11 September 2012 during a routine inspection
We checked that people who use this service:
- Their personal records including medical records are accurate, fit for purpose, held securely and remain confidential.
- Other records required to be kept to protect their safety and well being are maintained and held securely where required.
How this check was done
We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 11 September 2012, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.
Our judgement
Peoples records were being kept securely and confidentially.
Reasons for our judgement
One of the people, and the relative, we spoke with told us they knew how to access personal records. The person said, I did see my care plan some time ago. The relative said, I know I can ask to look at [my parents] care plan and they had looked at it. The people we spoke with, and the relative, thought that these personal records were kept safe and confidential. The relative said, theyre kept in a locked drawer in the office.
The staff members that we spoke with explained their understanding of their responsibilities in relation to the records kept at the service. This included completing incident and accident forms, ensuring peoples personal records were up to date and ensuring records were kept securely and confidentially. As well as confirming that peoples personal records were kept securely they said these records were kept accessible to care and nursing staff. We confirmed, from our observations, these comments from staff regarding document security and access to staff.
At our inspection of this service in March 2011 we found that peoples personal information was not always being kept confidential. At this inspection we found that this matter had been addressed by ensuring that personal information was kept securely and confidentially.
