Community mental health survey 2011
Read the results of our latest survey which looked at the experiences of people receiving community mental health services.
Eligibility and participation
- Participants: over 17,000
- Response rate: 33 per cent
- Age range: 16 years and older
- Time period: July to September 2010
- Eligibility: people who received care or treatment for a mental health condition, including services provided under the Care Programme Approach (CPA).
- Exclusions: people seen only once for an assessment, current inpatients and anyone primarily in receipt of learning disability, drug and alcohol, or forensic services.
Key findings for England
The vast majority of participants said:
- they were listened to carefully, treated with respect and dignity and that they had trust and confidence in the health or social care worker they had seen most recently.
- they could contact their care co-ordinator if they had a problem, and that their care was well organised.
- they had an out-of-office contact number they could call for emergencies.
The results showed that people needed to be more involved in some aspects of the provision of their care.
- Around a quarter of those who were prescribed new medication said that they were not told about the possible side effects.
- There remains a proportion of respondents who said that they did not know who their care co-ordinator or lead professional is.
- A tenth of those with a care plan said that they did not understand it.
Results for England
The briefing note describes all findings for England as a whole.
The results tables include a comparison with findings from the 2010 survey and identifies some of the significant changes.
Results for NHS Trusts
We have published the results for each trust in our care directory.
These results show how trusts performed on questions that could be scored in each area covered by the questionnaire. The technique used to analyse these results allows us to identify which trusts we can confidently say performed 'better', 'worse' or 'about the same'.

Benchmark reports
Each trust was also provided with a benchmark report on its scores in the survey, which enables them to benchmark their performance against all other trusts and identify areas for improvement.
Download the Individual benchmark reports for each trust from the NHS Surveys website.
