During an inspection looking at part of the service

We the Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited Mortonhampstead hospital to follow up from the inspection undertaken in September 2012. At that time we found improvements were needed in respect of staff not receiving appropriate professional development.

At this inspection we found the hospital inpatient unit was closed again. The inpatient unit had previously been closed in January 2013 but had re opened for admissions on 5th July 2013. We contacted the hospital in August 2013 and were informed the hospital had re-opened. When we visited again in October 2013 we were told that the hospital had closed again at the end of September due to a shortage of staff. We (the CQC) had not been informed that the hospital inpatient unit had again closed. We were unable to check compliance against the breach of Regulation found in September 2012. Therefore the hospital remains non compliant.

15 August 2012

During an inspection in response to concerns

We (the Care Quality Commission) carried out an unannounced inspection at Moretonhampstead Hospital on 15 August 2012. During our visit patients told us that they felt well cared for at this hospital and two patients compared it favourably to recent stays in larger hospitals. Patients we spoke with praised the staff at the hospital.

One patient said 'I don't think I could fault it, there is only one nurse on, but they are great'. A relative of a patient who was being treated at the hospital said that it was a very important local facility and they valued it greatly.
