During a routine inspection

Patients were provided with the right amount of information to make a decision about their proposed surgical treatment for their eye conditions. This was to enable them to give their valid consent for their surgical operations to proceed.

All of the patients and their relatives had positive comments to say about their care and treatment. It was described as being, 'Excellent' with one of the patients telling us that they continued to gain health benefits following their treatment of more than three years ago, for their eye condition.

Patients were satisfied with how their medication was managed. Improvements had been maintained to ensure that patients were protected from unsafe management of medication.

We saw that on the day of our inspection visit there was a sufficient number of staff to meet patients' individualised support, care and treatment needs. Staff said that they enjoyed their work and were allocated working time to attend training to ensure that patients received safe and appropriate support, care and treatment.

Quality assurance improvements had been maintained to ensure that patients were protected from unsafe usage of medication. In addition, there were other quality assurance systems in place which enabled members of staff and patients to make suggestions to improve the quality of the service. Furthermore, the complaints procedure enabled members of staff to take remedial action to improve the quality of the provision of the service.

During a routine inspection

We did not speak to any person who used the service on this occasion. However, during our last inspection visit, carried out on 16 August 2012, people told us that they were satisfied with the support they had received regarding the management of their medication.

During our inspection visit that was carried out on 27 September 2012 we found that improvements had been made in the safe storage of medication. Medication was stored in locked cupboards to ensure that medication was only accessed by staff who had been authorised to do so.

Improvements had also been made to ensure that the quality of the medication was maintained. Medication was now stored at the correct temperatures as recommended by the manufacturer.

People told us that they had the right amount of information before they attended the clinic. They received written information to tell them what they needed to bring with them, including information about prescribed medication they were taking. They were also given advice if they were not to drive a vehicle after they had their treatment, because this was deemed to be unsafe to do so.

The people that we spoke with also told us that they were given information about the risks and benefits of their treatment in a way that they could understand. The information was provided to them before and during their attendance at the clinic, where they were assessed and treated for their conditions. People said that this had alleviated their feelings of anxiety.

All of the people that were spoken with had positive comments to make about the standard and quality of care and treatment that they had received. One person described it as "Second to none". Another person told us that they could not fault the way they were treated and referred to the service as being, "Excellent".
