All Inspections

During a check to make sure that the improvements required had been made

At our last inspection 0n 16 July 2013 we found the provider had not completed regular audits in line with requirements of the Health Technical Memorandum 01-05: Decontamination in primary dental practices (HTM01-05). The provider sent us a comprehensive action plan and stated on 7 August 2013 that they were compliant with the regulations. At this inspection we found the provider had taken all necessary steps and was compliant with the regulations.

The provider informed us they had completed an infection control audit. We requested that they send the report to us to review. The provider sent the report and we found this to be in line with the requirements of HTM01-05. The provider also sent their updated infection control policy. This stated audits would be completed every six months. This is in line with requirements of HTM01-05.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who use the service who told us they had been going to the same practice for many years. They told us treatment choices were explained and they were made to feel at ease. One person told us, 'I am a nervous patient but they really help to put me at ease' Another told us, 'I have been coming to this practice for a long time and will continue to do so.'

We viewed seven patient records and found people's oral health was comprehensively assessed. For example, the dentist had checked for decay, soft tissue problems, the condition of people's gums, jaw and face and recorded a map of the mouth.

We toured the practice and found it to be clean and tidy. The practice had effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection which included the cleaning of used instruments. However, regular infection control audits, as required by the Department of Health, had not taken place. The practice did not have a written plan as to how they would achieve best practice which is also a requirement of the Department of Health

We reviewed the practice's complaints policy and noted this was on display at reception. This was also included in the practice leaflet given to each new patient. The practice had received no complaints.

Staff had worked at the practice for many years and said they felt supported by management and colleagues. Staff were given opportunities to take appropriate training to enhance their knowledge.
