Inspection carried out on 3 December 2013

During a routine inspection

Appropriate information about the practice and treatment cost was available via leaflets and posters. We found that the consent of patients was sought and they were informed of the costs of their treatment before giving consent.

Patient’s treatment was discussed with and explained to them. The relevant health and medical history of the patients was taken and regularly updated. A detailed examination of dental, gum and oral health was completed and recorded. Patients were given aftercare advice when necessary.

The practice had emergency medication, oxygen and a defibrillator and staff had been trained in its use.

Not all staff had yet attended training on safeguarding vulnerable adults although the manager was planning to arrange this in the new year. Staff understood their role in safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection.

With the exception of vulnerable adults training, staff had attended the core training and continuous professional development relevant to their role.

The manager had systems to monitor the operation of the practice and surveys of patient views had been collected and evaluated. The patients we spoke with were happy with the service they had received from Byways Dental Practice.
