During an inspection looking at part of the service

As part of our visit on 10 August 2011 we used a formal observation so as to enable us to directly observe and report on the quality of care experienced by people at Docking Grange. We did this by observing people's general level of wellbeing and engagement and to assess how those providing care and support, interact with people who use the service.

The results of this showed that there were long periods of time when people were just sitting in chairs with no engagement in activities or interactions with staff. One of the people living in the home with whom we spoke told us that they had been out shopping for new clothes the previous week and had enjoyed that.

We saw that when staff did interact with people living in the home they did this in a kind and respectful way.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We were not able to talk to many of the people living at the Home during our visit due to difficulties with communication. However, we did spend time observing staff supporting people throughout our visit.

People with whom we spoke told us that staff are 'nice' and 'kind'. They said that they like their meals. They also told us that there are not enough staff to enable them to go out when they want to. One of the people with whom we spoke told us that they are not able to move about their home independently due to the heavy doors.
