During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with seven people living in the home and four visitors. We observed staff treating people in a friendly and respectful way. We also observed people being offered choices and supported in a way that respected their privacy and dignity and encouraged their independence.

People said they were happy with the care and support they received. Comments included, "I'm as happy as Larry" and "The staff can't do enough for me". Records showed people's care, treatment and support was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan.

Throughout the day we saw people were involved in various activities. Comments included, 'There is always something for us to do" and "We get on well with each other; we entertain ourselves or we can join in". This meant people's activities were tailored to their individual needs and preferences.

People told us they were happy with the staff team. Comments included, "Staff are very nice, very kind" and "Staff are great fun; I get on with them all". They also told us there were sufficient staff numbers to meet their needs.

People had been encouraged to express their views and opinions of the service. One person said, "I can have my say about how things should be".

There were effective systems in place to assess and monitor how the home was managed and to monitor the quality of the service. This helped to protect people from poor care standards and helped to identify any areas of non-compliance.

They also told us they were happy with the care and support they received. Comments included, "I get the help that I need, when I need it", "I like it here; I'm looked after" and, "It's good care; I'm happy". People told us they had no complaints about the service but would be happy to raise their concerns with the staff or managers.

People also told us, "There is nothing much going on" and, "It's very quiet in the lounge so I like to stay in my room and watch TV". The manager told us an activity coordinator had been recruited which would help ensure there were suitable entertainments and activities for all people living in the home.

During a routine inspection

The people that we spoke with during our visit told us that they were treated well by staff and encouraged to make choices and decisions about how they spent their time. Comments included, "Staff do what I ask, they work around me", "I can do what I want" and "I get up early, it is my choice. I'm sure I could stay in bed if I wanted to".

People who we spoke with told us they were happy with the care and support that they received and were consulted about their daily routines. They said, "I am happy with the care" and "When I was feeling ill the staff looked after me, they were really good". However we found that some of the care records did not reflect the care that people needed and had not been kept up to date and that people had not been involved in ongoing reviews of their care needs.

People said they would be able to speak to staff or management if they were unhappy and they were often asked how they were. People's comments included, "Staff are very kind", "I am treated kindly", "I am able to speak up if I am unhappy" and "I know how to make a complaint but I have absolutely no complaints".

People who we spoke with told us they were happy with the staff team. Comments included, "They are brilliant staff", "They can't do enough for me" and "I get on well with the staff".

People told us there were generally enough staff although people's opinions about this varied. Comments included, "There are enough staff, I just press the buzzer and they come", "They always check to see if I need anything" and "I sometimes have to wait for a bit at night but staff always come and say when they will be back". The manager promised to look into this.

People told us they were able to express their views and opinions and were confident

they would be listened to. They told us they had not had any meetings recently but were able to discuss their concerns with staff or management.
