During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 24 October 2013 our observations showed us that staff supported people in a patient and sensitive way. During our discussions with staff we found that they had a good understanding and awareness of people's care needs and preferences and were enthusiastic about providing a good quality of service to people living at the home. One relative we spoke with told us: 'I can rest assured X is being looked after.'

We saw evidence from the records we looked at that people's consent had been sought. The care records we looked at included detailed information on how people's needs were met by staff and other health care providers and services. We saw that the home was maintained to a good standard. Staff told us some people who lived at the home enjoyed their independence and often went out shopping or travelled into town. We saw evidence that people received the support they needed to maintain their independence.

There were policies and procedures, records, and monitoring systems in place for the protection of people who used the service. We found that the provider had systems in place to monitor and respond to any complaints received by the home.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service told us that that they liked living there. Meetings were held every three months with the people using the service and any suggestions were minuted. These meetings were chaired by the independent advocacy service and had representatives from other services in the area.

All care plans showed evidence of regular review. Five out the six residents set of notes showed a signature or reason why not of resident involvement. This meant that people were involved in planning and agreed to their plan of care.

We spoke to staff and saw training records that told us the service had a robust safeguarding procedure that was known and understood by staff who worked at the service. The residents we spoke to said that there were enough staff to take them out and that the staff were good.

There were clear systems in place for the management of quality and audit.

A member of senior staff from the company completes a six monthly audit. The results of this audit are sent to and discussed with the service and any identified actions are supported centrally.
