Inspection carried out on 23 January 2014

During a routine inspection

On the day of our inspection we spoke with the provider, who is also the registered manager. We looked at three sets of staff recruitment records and three client support plans.

The provider told us staff who provide care and support to clients through Passion for Support are called Personal Assistants (PA’s).

Following the inspection we spoke with the Care Service Co-ordinator and two PA’s. We also spoke with two people who used the service and with the relatives of two people who used the service.

Passion for Support provide a range of support services to over 35 people, on the day of inspection, 9 of these people receive support for personal care.

Care plans and assessments encouraged people using the service to be independent, wherever possible. The records were person centred and included detailed information about peoples’ preferred daily routine.

People’s privacy, dignity and independence were respected.

Staff had access to PPE. For example, gloves and aprons. We saw that staff had either completed or were booked on an update for infection control training.

We looked at the recruitment records for three staff and saw evidence that the provider had undertaken appropriate checks before staff began work. This meant that staff had been properly checked to make sure they were suitable and safe to work with people.

People who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on.

Relatives and people using the service were positive, comments included:

“They are very good. My father is very happy.”

“The service I have is good.”

During a routine inspection

During this inspection we visited the agency's office to speak with the provider and to review records. Passion For Support provides mainly social care at the moment with only a small number of people receiving personal care. The Care Quality Commission does not regulate social care and therefore we only looked at records for people who received personal care. On this occasion it was not appropriate to speak with people who receive personal care but we saw the following comments made recently by people who use the service.

"With Passion for Support I have regained my self respect, dignity, the list goes on. I make my own choices and decisions and know that I have a PA (personal assistant) from Passion for Support there to support me when I need it."

"Passion for Support are currently supporting my Mother who has advanced Alzheimers. All of the staff that support her to remain in her own home are very caring, focused and punctual"

"My PA is very nice. They are really friendly and spend time talking to me and getting to know me"

"We could not possibly manage without the dedicated, caring team of Passion for Support.

We spoke with a member of the staff team who, when we asked how they felt about working for Passion for Support, said "I think it's absolutely brilliant"

During a routine inspection

On this occasion we did not speak to people who use the service. We saw from surveys conducted by Passion for Support that people were very satisfied with the service provided.
