The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by Radbrook Green Surgery in Shrewsbury to be Outstanding following an inspection carried out in November 2014.

Inspectors found that the practice was providing an innovative, caring, effective, responsive and well-led service that meets the needs of the population it serves.

A full report of the inspection has been published today.

Under CQC’s new programme of inspections, all England’s GP practices are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

The report on Radbrook Green Surgery highlights a number of areas of outstanding practice, including:

  • The practice used a nationally recognised patient safety framework to enable them to identify and put plans of care in place for patients with the highest health risks.
  • A community and care coordinator was employed to provide services to support vulnerable people. This included a support group for carers of people with dementia and a twice monthly bereavement support group.
  • The practice proactively engaged with teenagers to involve them in health care services.
  • A support group for patients with chronic fatigue and Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) had been established to ensure patients were supported in decisions about available care and treatment.
  • The practice had helped to establish Compassionate Communities; a voluntary service the community and care coordinator worked alongside to provide support vulnerable patients.
  • The practice provided GP support to a 12 bedded rehabilitation unit in a nursing home for patients whose vulnerability meant they needed additional support following discharge from hospital.

Janet Williamson, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice and Dentistry in CQC’s Central region said:

“It is clear that Radbrook Green Surgery is providing an effective and well led service which is a real asset to the people living in this part of Shropshire.

“Feedback from patients and support groups was overwhelmingly positive and many commented that staff went above and beyond their level of duty.

“We found that the practice displayed an excellent understanding of the differing needs of their patients with the community of Shrewsbury and acted on these needs in the planning and delivery of its services.

“Staff demonstrated a commitment to help support patients to live healthier lives and helped to support patients who were vulnerable or who simply needed extra advice and help beyond the normal call of duty.

“All of this hard work pays off in making a real difference for their patients – which is why we have found this practice to be Outstanding.”.
