A service that provides personal care and support at home to people living across the London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton and Sutton has been rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

Royal Mencap Society - Domiciliary Care Services - South London, has been rated Outstanding for being caring, responsive and well-led. It was rated Good for being safe and effective.

The service provides personal care and support to people living in supported living services. At the time of CQC’s inspection, in February 2017, there were a total of 44 people using the service. Supported living is where people rent their homes from a housing provider and receive an agreed amount of care from a separate care provider.

People who use the supported living scheme said they had built a very good relationship with Royal Mencap staff and that staff had worked closely with clients to build their confidence and learn to do more for themselves.

Royal Mencap used creative and innovative methods of encouraging people to express their views and make choices about their care, including the use of accessible technology where needed. This included support for people with additional communication needs.

Royal Mencap has a strong commitment to promoting people’s independence. People had access to adapted equipment according to their individual assessed needs to enable them to carry out daily living tasks independently.

Care plans took into account people’s history, family relationships and religious and cultural needs. Royal Mencap recognised people’s achievements and encouraged them to always improve by setting new targets whenever their care was reviewed. Staff also supported people to pursue education and employment opportunities and join social groups.

Debbie Ivanova, CQC's Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said:

“It is always refreshing to see a service that is rated Outstanding and Royal Mencap is no exception. Their staff go the extra mile to make sure the needs of service users are met.”
