FAQs – working as a Specialist Advisor

Are roles full or part-time?

Individuals assisting with the hospital inspections will be non-permanent workers for CQC. These roles are to assist the CQC on inspections on an ad hoc basis and therefore are not full-time or permanent positions.

Where is the role based? Can I do an inspection in my own area?

It is likely that you will be asked to join inspections outside of your region to avoid any conflict of interest, which may mean that you will need to travel.

What is the pay?

Professionals assisting with hospital inspections may be released from their day job under a secondment arrangement, in which case, their employer will be paid £300 per day.

If a professional undertakes the inspection work in their own time, then they will be paid £300 per day directly by the CQC (this is subject to PAYE and NIC at source).

Please note that CQC are unable to enter into contractual agreements with limited companies for services of this nature.

What are the working hours?

Inspections are generally quite intense and vary in length, but can last up to five days. Exact working hours also vary. During the main announced inspection, we are generally onsite at provider locations, as a minimum, from 9am to 5pm, this can involve an earlier start to allow travel to the site.

There may also be corroboration sessions after 5pm and some inspections will involve an out of hours visit to the provider. Your team leader will discuss this with team members and try to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the time commitments.
