How to use our guidance
We publish two main types of information for care providers: our provider handbooks and our guidance to help providers and managers meet the regulations.
1. Provider handbooks
Our provider handbooks explain what we look for when we inspect services. They also set out how we do our job – from registering providers to carrying out inspections, publishing ratings and taking enforcement action.
2. Guidance on meeting regulations
We also publish guidance on meeting regulations. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 and the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009 set out requirements for providers and registered managers. They include the fundamental standards – the standards below which care must never fall.
Our enforcement policy explains what action we will take if we find that a service has breached the regulations. Where we find inadequate care, we use our special measures process to make sure providers are offered appropriate support to help them improve within set timescales.
