The Care Quality Commission has formally warned Dr & Mrs M K Vachhani that they must make urgent improvements at Le Grand Nursing Home in Freckleton, Preston.

The warning follows a number of unannounced visits by inspectors to the care home in September and October last year in response to concerns. Inspectors found that the home was not providing care which was safe, effective, caring, responsive or well led.

A full report has been published on the CQC website.

Following the inspection, CQC issued five warning notices Dr & Mrs M K Vachhani to protect the health, safety and welfare of the residents:

  • Care and treatment was not always planned and delivered in a way that ensured people's safety and welfare.
  • The home did not ensure that people had assessments of mental capacity to make some or all of the decisions about their care, treatment and support.
  • Inspectors found evidence of incidents having occurred which had not been reported to the CQC in line with safeguarding procedures.
  • People were not protected from the risk of infection because people were not cared for in a clean, hygienic environment.
  • There were not enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs.
  • The provider did not have an effective system in place to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received

Debbie Westhead, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care in the North, said:

“We have told Dr & Mrs M K Vachhani that they must take action to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people who live there.

“Many people living at the home do not have the ability to consent and the home has not ensured they were lawfully protected.

“The provider should have systems in place to monitor the quality of the service, and it is of significant concern that Dr & Mrs M K Vachhani did not have such systems in place to halt the deterioration in quality that we have found.

“Since the inspection, we have been working closely with Lancashire County Council to ensure that people’s needs are being met properly.

“In serving Warning Notices we have signalled to the provider that the service provided is simply unacceptable. We will return imminently to check that the changes have been made to ensure people are safe and well cared for. If we find that this is not the case we will consider using our legal powers further to protect the people who live here.”
