Consultation response on how we regulate, inspect and rate services

Between Wednesday, 9 April and Wednesday, 4 June 2014 we asked for your feedback on our plans to change the way we regulate, inspect and rate health and social care services is England.

We have listened to your feedback and refined our approach to ensure that we're consistent and our judgements are fair, regardless of whether we're inspecting a large teaching hospital or a small community provider.

Who we heard from

We are really grateful to everyone that took the time and effort to respond to our consultation.

We received over 400 responses through our online webform.

We also received just under 200 written responses from:

  • national charities.
  • trade associations.
  • royal colleges.
  • think-tanks.
  • government departments.
  • regulators.
  • arm's-length bodies.
  • local community and voluntary sector groups.
  • providers of health and social care services.
  • members of the public.
  • our staff.

We carried out 36 consultation events where we heard from over 700 people including:

  • members of the public.
  • providers.
  • commissioners.
  • our staff.
  • organisations that represent people who use services (like local Healthwatch).

We carried out additional qualitative research with over 110 people that use health and social care services or care for those that do.

We held targeted focus groups with people from a range of communities across the country to gather case studies about good care in different settings.

We heard from over 200 people through live Q&As on Twitter and our public and provider online communities.

We also ran a social media campaign where we asked members of the public to send us photographs of themselves holding up boards with their definitions of what good care looks like written on them.

 

How we analysed feedback from the consultation

We commissioned Quality Health, an independent healthcare consultancy, to support the consultation process. Quality Health have reviewed, analysed and reported on all the feedback collected from all aspects of the consultation.
