The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has found the quality of care provided by the Boundary House Medical Centre in Sale, Trafford to be Outstanding following an inspection carried out in January 2015.

Inspectors rated the practice as Outstanding for providing responsive and well led services, and Good for providing services that are safe, caring and effective. The practice has received an overall rating of Outstanding.

A full report of the inspection can be seen here.

Under CQC’s new programme of inspections, all England’s GP practices are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.

The report on Boundary House Medical Centre highlighted a number of areas of outstanding practice, including:

  • The practice proactively engaged in research and clinical studies and worked with other local providers to share best practice. For example, staff worked in partnership with community matrons, drug and alcohol workers and participated in research such as the Salford Lung Study.
  • Patient safety was a priority in all that the practice did. Staff understood and fulfilled their responsibilities to raise concerns, and information about safety was highly valued and used to promote learning and continual improvements
  • One GP provided a free acupuncture clinic for patients with various conditions such as muscular-skeletal conditions, migraine, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome and this had led to a reduced number of referrals to secondary care and a reduction in prescribing costs.
  • Comprehensive care plans were in place for patients with poor mental health and patients at risk of unplanned hospital admissions and the practice offered proactive, personalised care to meet the needs of the older people within its patient population.
  • Patient feedback was very positive; results from the National Patient Survey showed the practice was performing very well. For example, 95% of respondents described their overall experience of this surgery as good and 94% said the last nurse they saw or spoke to was good at treating them with care and concern

Sue McMillan, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice in the North, said:

“It is clear Boundary House Medical Centre is providing a well led and highly responsive service which is a real asset to the people living in this part of Trafford.

“I was particularly impressed with practice’s proactive work to initiate positive service improvements for patients. We found that staff demonstrated a sound understanding of the differing needs of their patients and acted on these needs in the planning and delivery of its services

“The GPs and staff at Boundary House Medical Centre have demonstrated a real commitment to their patients.

“All of this hard work and dedication pays off in making a real difference for their patients – which is why we have found this practice to be Outstanding.”
