Monitoring essential standards of quality and safety

Find out about the new registration system:

From April 2010 new essential standards of quality and safety are being introduced gradually across all health and adult social care services in England. NHS hospitals are the first to come into the new system starting in April 2010.

Patient and surgeonBy law NHS hospitals now have a responsibility to ensure that the treatment, care and support they provide meets essential standards that:

  • protect your safety
  • respect your dignity and rights.

These are the standards everyone should be able to expect when they receive care.

By law, the Care Quality Commission will license NHS hospitals to provide treatment, care and support if they meet essential standards. We do so by:

  • ‘registering’ NHS trusts
  • continuously monitoring them to check that essential standards continue to be met.
