Study into ‘the impact of the economic downturn on the quality of health and social care’ 2009/10

What is the study about?

The study will focus on two things. It will identify:

  • what organisations are doing to plan for the expected financial squeeze in order to continue to provide high quality care, provide case studies of good practise and also highlight characteristics of readiness
  • those areas of care or service which are most vulnerable to the effects of a general budget constraint and also those areas where efficiencies could be made.  We believe the areas identified could be used by CQC in the future as part of its ongoing monitoring of quality and risk

Which organisations and services will we be looking at?

This study will look at four different types of organisations: NHS providers, providers of adult social care, NHS commissioners and commissioners of adult social care.

Latest update

The first phase of the work undertaken was to gain an understanding of the approaches being taken within the sectors. It was also to identify case studies of a range of health and social care providers and commissioners that are thought to be progressing well for the financial and demographic changes ahead.

The second phase of work includes conducting a voluntary national survey to test the extent to which good practise observed at case study sites is widespread and to gain an understanding of how organisations are preparing for the future challenges.

The first phase of the study has now been completed. We do not intend to undertake any further work on this study until the autumn. Further information will be published here when the study resumes.
